Eid ul-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims worldwide as it marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan.
This year fasting begins on March 10. Eid-ul-Fitr (Feast of Breaking Fast) ends on April 9, 2024
Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection, spiritual cleansing, prayer, and charity for Muslims. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, which includes zakat (charity), prayers, testament of faith, and Hajj (pilgrimage).
Four reasons why Muslims fast:
1. It was commanded by God. Primary purpose is to gain greater God-consciousness.
2. To increase one’s spirituality and strengthen one’s moral character.
3. To appreciate food and drink and develop empathy with those less fortunate than oneself.
4. To practice self-control.
While most people associate Ramadan with fasting, it is equally about the importance of giving back in your community. Giving always brings out the best in people, and Ramadan is welcomed reminder to remember those less fortunate and continue to give a helping hand to those in need throughout the year.
