Desis of Doylestown is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization for social change.
Our vision is to to create an equitable and inclusive environment in Bucks County, where South Asians and all other community members feel welcome and supported, regardless of race, gender, color, sexuality, and religion.
We do this by opening hearts and minds through education, advocacy, allyship, strategic partnerships, community gatherings, cultural events and by creating a space and place where our community of South Asians can connect and foster a sense of belonging through community engagement.
Desis of Doylestown was created in the fall of 2021, after being inspired by the activism and dedication of Central Bucks student Paree Pasi. Paree had petitioned Central Bucks to have Diwali, recognized as a holiday on the school calendar at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.
Upon learning in September of 2021 that Diwali would in fact be recognized, local residents and members of the Desi community Sheela Rai and Silvi Haldipur were joined by Doylestown borough resident Larissa Hopwood, a children’s musician, and Marlene Pray, director of the Rainbow Room. These women met with Paree Pasi, the student who had set it all into motion, and between them, the idea for the Diwali event at Burpee Park took shape. The event, brainstormed only three weeks before the actual holiday, was embraced by Borough Council, and many members of the community came together to support it. It featured food, music, children’s activities, Bollywood dance lessons, and mehndi, and drew a large, diverse crowd.
While planning the Diwali event, Desis of Doylestown was born.
